For as long as we can remember, I have called my sister Diana "Bird" or variations that include the nickname Bird. She is 4 1/2 years my senior which means little now we are in the middle of our lives but when you're kids it is huge.
We have always teased one another. Laughed until no sound escapes and tears stream down our faces. Even when she didn't want her little sister hanging around her and her friends, at home we got along quite well.
I think originally I named Diana "Bird" in reference to the size and shape of her nose. Despite the difference in our ages, we were often mistaken for as twins. This was mostly due to two things: 1. our mother made most of our clothes and often bought enough material in the same pattern to make the same outfit or only slightly different. For example, since I was more of a girlie girl, she made me dresses whereas Bird being a tomboy preferred "slacks". 2. I was tall for my age and chubby whereas Bird was of average height for her age and slender.
To us, anyone who thought us twins were blind. Our eyes, noses, lips, the shape of our faces are very different. Diana's features are a blend of our mother and the Case side of our father's family. My features mirror our grandmother Cis Nora or the Sealey side of the family and as I age, my mother's side has begun to emerge a bit.
Bird and I loved to tease each other about our different noses in particular. I insisted that her nostrils were thick enough to feed an entire village in Africa while she'd say my nostrils were so wide, you could park several cars in each side.
Somewhere along the line, I began to create variations on the name Bird. We now do it for just about every life occurrence good or bad and usually to make each other smile, if not laugh.
"Bird" has become a loving term of endearment, a badge of honour, a club with a very exclusive membership.
There are other names that I created and which we both use but "Bird" is the most significant and a forever name.
Here are some of the variations you may see in this (and other blogs of mine)
Birdie, Birdieeee, Birdface, Birdeena, OriginalBird, MainBird, Birdunda, Birdaloo, Bird-in-law, SisterBird, BluenoseBird, SwimmerBird, BikerBird, RunnerBird, MarathonBird, TriathlonBird, SprintBird, OlympicBird
and so
