EPIC Dartmouth is in 28 days!

Sunday, June 29th I will be doing this

Looking forward to it! That is the bike course I cycled last Sunday (plus 7k).

Can't wait to get the EPIC race kit I ordered eta June 16th. My plan is to wear it for Ironman Lake Placid. So, the EPIC race will be a perfect chance to make sure it fits well with no chafing issues more body-glide, chamois butter and Vaseline won't fix. Yep, gotta be well lubed to do these long distances.

Here is a preview of what the kit kinda looks like...this is the fantastically practical yet stylish windbreaker I use a lot. Can you spot the Statue of Liberty in the distance? Taken the day before the New York City Marathon - Nov. 4th, 2013.

Time to get training

Quick recap first
It has been a good week. Skipped Thursday as I donated blood and felt a bit fatigued in the morning but other than that I did all my workouts with no issues after last weekend's massive run - bike.

Great swims this week!
Tues 2900m - Wed 3300m - Fri 3500m. Best part I am finally feeling the "flow". There's a feeling I haven't felt all winter/spring - swims have been tough, like I'm fighting the water and not gliding on the surface. My breathing hasn't been as I like it and I've had some soreness and sometimes pain from "muscling" through my stroke. My kick has felt mechanical. I was starting to get worried. I was doing the distances and following the plans but not feeling efficient which is the ultimate goal so you don't come out if the water toast!  This week it all came together. I am so relieved and delighted. The timing is perfect as soon I'll have to enter the lakes as cold as they will be.

Yesterday I did an hr bike, lunch run and a 1:27 swim.

Today... In a few minutes - 20 min recovery swim and a 3 hr run on the BLT trail. Home playtime with Sealey outside. Get Pitoune ready for tomorrow and playtime with Barry, supper, watch the end of Thor (had to go o bed midway thru!!) and early to bed.

Sunday - 7:30am departure from home to the Annapolis Valley gem of a town Wolfville where it is Apple Blossom Festival time. Won't stay in Wolfville too long but will have an "apple themed" treat - cider! Then cycle home - mostly uphill! 130k - gonna be a scenic one but a hard one! Then a 15 min run immediately.

May 24-25 ... An EPIC training wknd and week!

Sunday May 25 - 2:30 run ... Zone 2 is slow so I amused myself counting my footstrikes or cadence. Did the flattest trail I know Rails to Trails also known as the BLT ... Saving some energy for Sunday!

Saturday May 24 - cycled the Epic course. Grateful to Paul Oliver and Pascal Osti for the company out to Musqudoboit Harbour 93,5 km and Kasia Daniger who cycled from there back to Dartmouth 93,5 km! My longest ride ever!!! And a terrific confidence builder. The most I'd ever done was 160 km two summers ago.
Time wise I completed exactly what I had planned. Avg speed 26,5 kph so 6hr48min for EPIC and Ironman Lake Placid - not too shabby given a stiff headwind on the way out, fog, showers and so cold our hands and feet were numb! The ride back was a bit better. I used my nutrition exactly as I want to on race day. Not nearly as hilly or mountainous as the Adirondacks (not even close) but I am very happy with my time. Total for 187 km - 7:05 and I ran for 15 min. It ok to good after five minutes

I didn't doubt that I could do the distance but it was stressful not having done it.

End of another big week...
To recap in the 8 days in Tucson with no work or home life stuff I cycled 496 km - ran 55 km - swam a mere 2000m due to allergies - oh and ride a horse for 3 hrs

This past 8 days with work, home life stuff I cycled 400 kms - ran 57 km - swam 3500m

Congratulations to Birdie and Sandy on buying their beautiful
NEW to them home with 35 acres in Prince Edward County, ON!
The moment I saw it, I loved it!
Can't wait to visit, explore ... good grief, with that much land they might not even notice me building a small cabin in the woods by the brook... lol!

To my big Birdie sister who I love so very much ... Mummy would be extremely proud of you - as I am. You have worked so very hard, made many sacrifices, you so deserve a healthier
work-life balance and relaxed county piece of heaven to call "home sweet home".

P.S. My house warming gift will include a hearty loaf of gluten-free bread, sea salt (aka East Coast salt water taffy) and you know you can count on me bringing wine...we'll drink toast to joy and prosperity!

So Proud of Kristin

Barry (aka Kristin's Dad, Sealey's BDD, Paco's BDGD, etc) and I are so very proud of Kristin for this professional recognition in journalism excellence I have to share this news with you.

In a congratulatory letter to Kristin on May 14th, Katie A. Walmsely, President of the prestigious Portfolio Management Association of Canada noted

You are the only journalist in addition to the 3 prize winners who will be honoured at this event.

Congratulations Kristin!

Look out Halifax, she's leaving Toronto on this high note and moving back to Nova Scotia!!!

Big Day! Sunday May 18

My training plan always has me doing a long run on Saturday and a long bike ride on Sunday.

Since it was Blue Nose marathon wknd and I haven't missed one in its 11 yr history, I shifted my run to Sunday and decided to do the half marathon since my plan said a 2 hr run.

Saturday, as volunteer Board members, Jennifer Lewandowski and  I had the joy and honour to represent the Halifax Triathlon Club at the Speaker's Corner stage at the Expo. It was at 10h30 and conflicted with the youth run (4100 kids participated - yay!) so our audience size was modest but those who were there received a quick presentation on the theme "TRY A TRi" and basic 15 min experience-based chat to runners who have never done a tri - sorta a Triathlon 101 or Everything you ever wanted to know about the sport of  triathlon but were afraid to ask. We kept it light and had fun doing it!

Sunday
My half marathon wasn't the fastest - last year my time was 1:53 a personal record. This year the focus wasn't speed but training and enjoying my weekly long run with thousands for company. I was so chill, I didn't leave the house until 7:10am and the race start was 8:10. 40 min drive, finding parking, quickly walking to site to drop off my bag, long porta-pottie line... The gun went off as I was in the honey-hut (sure didn't smell sweet like honey ) because there are so many people who run the half I made it to the start and there were still several hundred who had yet to cross the timing chip start line. The weather for a change was perfect! Many records were broken by friends and two Kenyan men who made the event that much more exiciting
Here's what I wore and link to my results

Later the same day I decided to do my long bike as the forecast for the holiday Monday was not good. Also it meant I could leave Monday as a recovery day with just a swim.

Here I am sporting my new Cactus Cycling Club attire with Evangeline loaded with her luggage rack & bag to imitate a typical ride to and from work.

51k each way but usually with a 8 hr workday in between, I plan at least once a wk to do this ride to get in more mileage. Longer home due to climbs.
This day it was so foggy and cold in the city I had to pile on all the clothes I had in the luggage bag - windbreaker & rain pants. All of it came off as I moved away from the harbour

Some awesome things happened

Last 7days some wonderful surprises things happened to me in the midst of my low energy forgetful chaos...

April 19th came and went - I didn't even know Birdie's monthly pre-50th birthday gift had arrived until Barry told me on the 22nd. I planned to wait til Goo Friday to open it as a treat but by Thursday evening, I could wait no longer.

There was an Easter card for the 3 of us and a special sister one for me and a great 50th card too! The line "don't think of it as turning 50, think of it as 5 perfect 10's! Oh and 2 pairs of Team Canada shades ... Neither o us can decide which we prefer so both it is!!

There were chocolates that didn't last :p

And a book that I have been wanting to read and will be perfect to take away with me to AZ.
There was also a little lamb that Sealey adopted aka stole!

Saturday after my long run I noticed that yet again my refurbished Garmin 405 was dying a slow painful death. It has been unpredictable over the last 6 months. My model is very outdated - it is my 3rd. I use it everyday I bike (cadence, distance, speed, heart rate, time) or run (all but cadence) = a lot. I'd be lost without it training and it would throw a major wrench in my race(s) if it konked out. The logical replacement is $499 which is not in my budget.

At my tri club AGM I bought $20 in tickets on this very special device and I WON!

Monday after another fab treatment with my Osteopath Jody Aitken (5 stars), I finally dropped of Pitoune to get new components installed. In the end only one fit her but it was the most important - DuraAce rear derailleur. Still need to get a 12-28 cassette and chain to help climb those Lake Placid hills! And a Power Tap hub power meter. I was hoping and praying for a decent tax refund.

That was the day I locked the keys in my car. So Barry wisely called our accountant and arranged to pick up our returns. I am getting a decent refund. It will pay for the items above and some of these trips I'm taking May, June (Seattle) July (Lake  Placid). So that's #3

On Wednesday I arrived at work to find that my wonderful co-worker and friend Katerine was gifting me a perfect sundress and top - I would buy these! Very thoughtful!

Last two wks = overwhelmingly chaotic

We made Last week was rest/recovery & time trials... I admit I overdid it in typical fashion over Easter weekend having done massive training sessions and heavy duty Spring cleaning in the yard.

The yard is large and I've many garden plots all of which begged for raking to remove leafs that I had no time to deal with last fall (though Barry & Sealey did tackle some - bless). The gardens benefitted from my neglect as it was a harsh winter so the protection was helpful.

Managed to liberate "most" of my Spring garden beds and removed leafs, dead grass and Sealey (plus neighbourhood dogs') waste from the majority of the lawn. Already after rain and late snowfall, my efforts have been rewarded - air circulation, agitation and some pruning have meant it looks pretty decent. No idea when I have time to to the rest but won't go at it all in one go again!

Oh I should add that Sealey has us well trained. Since was young, whenever we do yard work she gets her ball tossed. Sounds fair but she is uber fast as retrieving so it means constantly bending over to pick up the ball she places at my feet or in thw wheelbarrow if she notices that I'm filling it, walking it to our woodlot for disposal. Sometimes I don't notice the ball at the bottom as I begin (over)loading it. Not joyful to search through yard waste heaps although she can often dig it out once it hasn't been found for 5 minutes and the impatient barking begins. All to say that yard work was exhausting when I wasn't doing triathlon training and racing - more so with me increasing the distance each year. Duh! I hadn't given it much thought until Tuesday morning when everything ached.

Good Friday I biked outdoors then went for my swim time trial test at Canada Games Centre and did 2 hrs of yardwiork. Saturday the whole family was up by 5am and on the road to Tatamagouche which is 2 hrs north of us. I had a run test scheduled so I decided to do it at a 10k race.

The course was a bit hilly but the weather was perfect! I was/am pleased with my time: 51 min 11 sec (5:08/km)

My personal best time for a 10k was 1 yrs ago at the Navy race on a flat course on the August long weekend. So for an April hillier race I am happy with it.
We made time post race to give Sealey a good run in a field. German Shorthair Pointers are amazing runners ...
and jumpers...

Easter Sunday 2:40 on the bike followed immediately by a 15 min run and 2 hrs of yard work.  Monday was supposed to be a day off but I did 5 hrs of yard work. No wonder I was toast starting the next week.

Somehow, I managed to get in all my workouts with the exception of an optional bike that the plan said to skip if fatigued. It was a massive volume and intensity training week too!

This week was possibly the hardest training-wise. I had all sorts of preparation to do for the Spring Training camp in Tucson - leaving at 6:30am on Saturday, May 3rd (more on that in next several posts). I had low energy and my body was tired from the last several weeks.

It's so hard for us devoted triathlon nuts to miss a workout. I can still count on one hand how many workouts I have not done since December - very few. The guilt of missing a workout is a huge factor. But this week of all weeks, I gave myself permission to skip as many as needed as I was getting too stressed out. I also have learned to listen to my body. My body felt tuckered out.

I have learned first-hand and via many experts that by doing long or highly intense workouts when fatigued only compounds the fatigued. Sounds like common sense to the non-endurance athlete.

Again, being on this journey of structured workouts and seeing the emails and calendar alerts about what workout is planned and viewing my training plan online with blanks for the first time does something to the morale. I fought it though as I know I could have become ill or injured had I pushed my body and deprived myself of a 1-1.5 hr more sleep in the mornings. I did manage to do a good core strength workout, my long swim of 3400m and a short run. Knowing I will have a full week devoted to training only and some R & R helped immensely.

A few typical signs of being distracted ... This week, I locked my keys in the car when I took it into the city. Poor Barry had to come from Mt Uniacke to rescue me with his set. I left my coffee mug and mittens on the bus. The mitts don't matter but the cup was personalized with photos of Sealey and I laughing and smiling after 70.3 Mt Tremblant - it's the 2nd time I've done that. This cup was a replacement for an identical one I left on the bus last year before a trip! I tripped our home alarm at 7:30am - I always disarm the garage first thing when I get up. It

As I was recalling with Barry, I went through the same thing last yr and I think just about every year when I end the long Base block and am about to begin the Build block which is that much more demanding. I feel overwhelmed thinking ahead too often vs letting things unfold and trusting that I am ready having trained well all winter. Fear also plays a part. And doubts sneak in. It is part of the process. Part of being a gal who is almost 50 challenging her limits. Facing demons of human friaility. Two voices competing - the positive and the negative... good & evil... ying & yang ... winner and loser.

The timing of Spring Training to rejuvenate, motivate, refocus and relaxation could not be better!

Bring it!
