Garmin Connect - EPIC swim - using Grand Falls, NF native Ruth Wall's wetsuit, Gaetan Tremblay's goggles, no show race #452's swim cap altered moments before I began to my # 458! No warm-up and as stats show I swam a bit extra but not bad...4.19k instead of 3.8k. Note to self: make sure that IMLP allows compression socks well before race morning.
Garmin Connect - EPIC T1 - really pleased with my transition from swim to bike in terms of time. My Lake Placid goal is 5 min or less and I'm close. I figured for EPIC I'd be around 7 min. I trained for it but knew it was new territory for me. Note to self: don't forget towel in T1 bag - will make putting on tight bike shorts over wet legs easier and faster...also to get grit or sand off feet before putting on bike socks.
Garmin Connect - EPIC bike - OK so the 2 flat tires aren't on there but actually they are - notice total bike time 6:55:33 vs moving time 6:33:42
Garmin Connect - EPIC T2 - thrilled with my T2 as it can be even faster than 3:06 for 2 reasons... as seen from the map of my movements, I had to return to the tent to retrieve my visor which cost me approx 1 min and didn't press lap button until about 15 secs after crossing timing mat to start run. I expect IMLP T2 to be slower owing to the harder bike course and higher heart rate due to altitude and big climb to transition. Note to self: powder running shoes and change socks in LP - might help with "feet on fire" for first 10k off the bike in cleat pressure area.
Garmin Connect - EPIC run - over the moon delighted with how I felt on the run and that my heart rate avg was zone 2 with the max in zone 3. That is exactly where it needs to be to run well. Stacy's run plan works = walk through aid stations to flush lactic acid and run better intervals between aid stations. I might just attain my "successful Ironman race goal" = run the majority of the 42.2 kms and finish strong, smiling and injury-free! I ran faster second half of the half marathon distance - a negative split is so satisfying and the ultimate goal of all racers.
EPIC is the perfect race to rehearse your race strategy and test your fitness for IM Lake Placid or IM Canada - 4 weeks later.
Do it Iain McD!
