Coach & Friend - Ken Grandy

Ken Grandy sent me an email earlier this week that I have printed and will add to the race plan I will review daily during race week and race morning.

Yes, it is that supportive.

If you read my post under the Annual Training Plan tab, you will better understand the role Ken played in my very first year learning about the sport of triathlon and specifically cycling. I had no more experience than most kids growing up. I coveted my 10 speed during high school - it was my sweet sixteen gift from my mum. The winter before I got into doing triathlons, I bought an $800 tri bike on eBay and was determined to learn all I could.

Ken has raced Ironman Lake Placid. He knows the course first-hand. And while
Ken is not currently my coach. As I said to him "once a coach, always a coach and a damned good one at that!"

Ken told me things I didn't realize I needed to hear until he addressed some things that have troubled me, truth be told.

He believes in my ability to be successful on July 27th. That vote of confidence and other things he volunteered plus some invaluable contextual course-specific intel will help me conquer the demons of doubt that inevitably seep into the mind.

When I need to hush that voice in my head - in addition to some other techniques that I've learned over the years - Ken's words will drown them out (or the tears will! I've got to stop crying each time I read it hahaha)

I owe you one Ken!

Big love my friend, sport psychologist, fellow triathlete and coach.
