The weather was wicked yesterday afternoon. Windy, isolated showers and hail!! Still went to Kearney Lake where heartier types (including my Scottish friends Stu Cameron and Jo Fraser) with amphibian blood braved the choppy current and frigid water temperature. I dipped my toes in and got instant Raynauds in my hands and feet. No brainer decision for me the I'd he'd to the pool instead.
5000m swim is preferable for me in open water where I can establish a rhythm. A 25m pool means 200 laps which can be tedious.
So proud of myself for not only doing this but I won a struggle with two painful cramps - foot cramp just prior to 4000m and a wicked Charlie-horse at 4500m. Both I have had before but have always stopped. This time I told myself that I had to deal with it and keep swimming - "endure" and be victorious. I made myself relax the ailing body part and then gently stretched it out while doing mostly pull. It worked. It was so hard and so painful but I figured if it happened in a race I would have this success to draw from and calm me down. That experience was worth the temporary physical pain psychologically.
My stats I am super pleased with given I had to turn every 25m and did the warmup and cooldown (1000m combined) at a relaxed pace plus the total time and pace includes the rest breaks. 1 hr 51 min - avg pace 2:13/100m
I did all of it freestyle:
Warmup 2x 250m (40sec rest)
Main set: 2 x 2000m (40 sec rest)
Cool down: 500m

Ironman Lake Placid swim start aka the human blender
I admit the thought freaks me out! 5000m!!!!
Only noticed the distance last evening ... longest this training season has been 3300m I think. I swam 3.8k last summer and wondered when my plan was going to have me swim longer.
Eckk!
Game plan is to join a bunch of tri club pals at Kearney Lake around 6pm after picking up Pitoune from bike shop. Swim as much of the set below in the lake versus my training plan set ... but the plan has a note that says "might consider longer endurance set". I think it would help boost my confidence for next weeks EPIC swim to do the following:
Warmup: 250m x 2 easy focusing on form
Mainset: 4000m nonstop
Cooldown: 250m x 2 easy focusing on form.
The challenge is time. I doubt any of the other swimmers will have as long a set to do. For safety reasons I need someone else there even on the beach to make sure I'm ok. This may mean leaving the lake in the middle of the long set - driving to the pool about 10 min away and finishing the set there. I did that on Wednesday when my two lake swim companions needed to leave after I'd only done 800m of my 3000m set. It worked out OK.
Notice both races have us swimming counter-clockwise which isn't the norm... time for bilateral breathing...gonna have to practice that tonight and moving forward!
